Marine ply is pretty expensive. Is that what you use to ensure waterproofing?

No! Marine ply is not required. We utilise ply, of varying sizes and thickness, depending on the rafter and truss sizes and their spacing. We then have a waterproofing layer, that protects the wood from moisture and water.
